Reinstatement Application Review Service

If an F-1 student fails to maintain F-1 status, the student must file for reinstatement with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or depart the United States immediately. In general, a student may be eligible for reinstatement if they:

  • Have not been out of status for more than five months at the time of filing, unless exceptional circumstances prevented timely filing.
  • Do not have a record of repeated or willful violations of regulations.
  • Have not worked without authorization.
  • Are pursuing or intend to pursue a full course of study in the immediate future at your school.
  • Are not deportable for any reason other than failing to maintain F-1 or M-1 status.
  • Can show that either:
    • circumstances beyond the student’s control caused the status violation, or
    • the student dropped below a full course load for a reason the DSO could have authorized and would suffer extreme hardship if reinstatement is denied.

Please refer to How Should an F or M Student File for Reinstatement for additional details.
